Aside from lots of rain, and more rain, and plenty of rain?
Not too much actually. We are enjoying a wet summer so far, and I imagine there will be TONS of bugs this year. All in all not a really busy year for us at the moment, but then we all know how that can change in a heartbeat. |

All kinds and lots of them. My favorite's are the tiny black flies and bull dogs. The clouds of mosquitoes don't even compare....

How do you have bugs when it freezes there in the winter?

The bugs are not to be believed in the summer. We're basically surrounded by water in one way or another. Alot of stagnant sitting water that breeds all
kinds of bugs. Swarms at times, just like Africa. If i was forced to sleep on the dempster in the summer i kept the truck running with the A.C. on high to keep
the bugs out.

Jordan, you didn't mention that bull-dogs actually take a chunk of flesh outa ya. The mosquitoes can get bad enough to stampede a herd of
caribou. In fact they constantly do.............
If you park on the causeway at the river at Ft Providense to wait for the ferry, the downwind side of your vehicle will literally be black with Blackflies. Mosquitoes bites, one can get used to, almost. Blackflies are the scourge of the north. In Yellowknife, just when one thought it safe, bugless, I've seen blackflies re-emerge after the first snowfall of fall melts. Fortunately, I'm allergic to blackfly, mosquito and other biting/stinging insect stings/bites, so I always end up with beautiful itches, lumps and swellings. Blackfly bites are the worst for me, I get golf ball size lumps, even up to a month later old bites will flare up and itch like a bastard all over again, certainly. "Deep Woods Off" applied /sprayed directly to the face and exposed skin is a miracle. Pre-contact, how the natives lived without bug protection chemicals is a wonderment. The early explorers deserved medals for bravery by just continuing into bug infested lands. The best they had was stuff called citronella or kerosene... neither very affective. Head nets are a true inconvenience. Outdoors exposing ones nether regions for any purpose, but mainly to perform the bodily function of waste elimination, procreation etc., can scar ones psyche and other soft bits for life. "Deep Woods Off", burns exposed mucus membranes. It's a rock and a hardplace, I tell ya. Goodness gracious, Gerry Lee Lewis was absolutely correct!
The campfire/smoke myth is exactly that, a myth. Biting bugs are actually attracted by campfires, cigarettes, pipes and joints, obviously. Lots of people (giant blood bags) stand around campfires, flapping their arms, coughing, waiting to get bitten, eyes watering. Campfires emit a localised plume of movement, carbon dioxide and infra red, all three cues, biting, blood sucking insects use to home in on their intended prey, a fact. For a more complete story, check my blog.

They are very bad here right now. 2 of my guys have had bad reactions just as Icemann put it. Large golf ball sized bites.... It cannot be understated the
impact of the bugs up here. Even hard on the equipment as they clog up the rads. I used to use the power hose on the Louis Cardinal ferry at the Mackenzie
crossing to clean it out so i wouldn't overheat pulling the Richardson's. It will snow any day to kill'em.....

Well, it's nice to know I'm not the only one with allergies - to sun and mosquitoes. I usually do volunteer work for a few weeks during the summers. It
involves being outdoors long enough for the most part to get to and from, not much more than that. A couple years back I ended up with the nastiest case
I've ever had: Mosquito bites on top of sunburn/sun poisoning. The mosquitoes we get 'round here are (some years) roughly the size of a Cessna 2-seater
- slightly smaller than a horsefly was the biggest I've ever seen. Mean little bastards that really go out for blood. The most wonderful
thing about winter? It kills all the hematovoric wildlife!
