You're right LB............however, I'm still keeping an eye on it.
My ol' Buddy Coldswim says: Kingland has blocked hotmail and blog sites -- Big brother !!!
Ice road is underway , I can hear the jakes right now.
I hear anywhere from 5 to 7000 loads , much less than before .. the mines are hurting
I am flying into Snap Lake for 2 days next week and then to Diavik (day trip) next week ,
possibly into BHP Ekati before months end -- not quite my idea of 'retirement' travel

News > Headline News > 02/17/2009 Ice road truckers feel the economic freeze 02/17/2009 If you answered yes no maybe view results YELLOWKNIFE -- The winter road in Canada's north that received worldwide attention as part of the U.S.-based History Channel's hit show Ice Road Truckers is seeing a little less action these days. But the slowdown along the Tibbitt to Contwoyto ice road has nothing to do with Hollywood, but rather the far-reaching global economic downturn. According to the Northern News Service, one closed mine and a general slowdown in production have led to a drop in shipments for trucking companies working the famous route. "They're dropping loads per truck. The mines are cutting back because of the economy and we're all affected - some worse than others," Blair Weatherby, president of the NWT Motor Transport Association, told local media. "Some (companies) didn't even get contracts this year." The winter road opened Feb. 2 and is operating on schedule, completing 10 percent of this season's shipments. The number of those on-time shipments, however, has gone down. Initial rumors in the area suggested total tonnage for this season's shipments would be cut in half, but Erik Madsen the director of the winter road, says it will be only 45,000 tonnes less than last year - down to 200,000 tonnes. In other words, total tonnes being shipped to the mines has dropped to an expected 200,000 tonnes from 245,000 in 2008. Mining companies were originally expecting to ship 245,000 tonnes this year as well. While the drop in tonnage will mean the trucks that are hired will do between eight to 10 loads, rather than 20 to 25 loads, Weatherby says the news isn't all bad. "If you go back five or 10 years, we're still (shipping) more than we were then," he notes.

After talking with some of the drivers, they report overall the road is in great shape so far.
The Snap Lake road is apparently taking a beating because of speeding drivers. 6 Ventures drivers have been suspended. 5 for 5 days and one for the season. No appeals because after they checked it out the drivers were coming up to level portages, meaning they had no reason to be speeding. |

LB. When you were last there, what did they use to monitor drivers' driving habits? When not patrolling, I used to spend hour going over the Sangamo cards
looking for infractions..........I hated it. I also checked ashtrays for roaches.

The security folks up the road know when you are dispatched from the Meadows. Some simple math for time speed distance will expose the speeders, as well as
catching up to the group that was sent up the road 20 or more minutes ahead.
That and radar guns. Sometimes you'd find the security trucks sitting at the ends of a portage or someplace, just as a reminder. |

Yeah, I'd stop in the middle of MacKay, put my hood up and shoot alongside the mirror. Bastard! It worked once or twice then everyone caught on.

I see whoever is responsible for the winter road updates on the JVC site is asleep at the switch. One entry on Dec 18 and nothing since.
I was starting to wonder if they just decided to call the whole thing off. |

Dan Burkhart wrote:Now why would you wonder something like that, Dan? There have been ice roads operating successfully in the NWT since the 1960s, long before anybody in the Great Green South, particularly TV Production companies were interested or even gave a thought to the existance of ice roads. Ice Roads are a business not a reality show. My thoughts are, they don't need the publisicity and that NUNA and the JVC are quite happy to see the back of all things TV and see no need to update their site. Through local radio, TV, internet, word on street the local public is kept constantly aware of the status of and any changes to the conditions of the ice roads. http://www.dot.gov.nt.ca/_live/pages/wpPages/Open_Close_Date_Winter_Roads.aspx

Actually, I think we might see a whack of internet stuff close down once they get HAMMERED with the post Mar 4th beginnings.
Could you imagine trying to run your business up there when every call is from an eligible candidate? How do you find the real ones? How do you do business with your phone and e-ail choked with thousands of contacts? Even this site is going to see a surge in viewers. Not a good thing when you are on the receiving end of unintended consequences |

which reminds me...how are we each liable to get hammered? that message thing up there accessible to the casual viewer or just our allowed viewers?
By our existence post HC intro in the US, we are now a target of the search engines like we weren't the last time. Iceman, what sort of pain did you get the last time, as the only one on here recreating on the internet with "winter road" in your handle during the first tsunami? TCL has already given us an earful as to the huge obstruction to conducting business it made for him. |

LB. Didn't hurt me a bit. I suppose I got a few extra blog hits but it's hard to tell, certainly nothing negative. My blog did get mentioned in an article in 'Vacation Country Travel Guide' Magazine and a Dutchman wanted to use my photos and in the Ice Roads movie he made.I think in the real world, Ice Road Truckers are barely a blip on the event horizon. Any comments to my blog have been positive. I wouldn't get too excited, we might get a lot of drive-bys, but if we get six new members/commenters.........I'll be very surprised.
