Thank you Sled. Well, guessing he is maxed out legal American weight then should have been in 5th gear, and I stood corrected on what should have happened.
taking the truck out of gear while coasting downhill is one of the things you shouldn't do because it can help you gain speed very quickly and dangerously.
Hubby said what he would have done was pulled over on the shoulder and put it in the proper gear.

I have a question for ya. Is it even possible for the 'Jake' not to work and then all of a sudden it works again?

Yes, it is. I don't know enough to remember how to explain but there are a bunch of mechanically sound drivers that would just love to tell you how they
work.

I know how the 'Jake' works Bumps as far as using a varying number of engine cylinders to control the amount of 'drag' on the driveline. We
had a long discussion about it in the garage thread one time. I can't think of a reason it could fail unless the electricals had a short or something and
they could not be activated.

It could mess up due to electrical or the valves could be bad, the springs can jamb up. We had our jakes quit in 6th gear as we were going down Mt. Eagle which
is a 7% grade.

Some of you might be interested in the design and construction of the pipeline.

Boy, my old buddy Cranky Cranna could give ya the lowdown on Jakes, he's an HD Diesel Mechanic. He's the one that enlightened me on Jkaes way back when
I first started driving. Unfortunately, at the moment he's being his ornery self and hasn't spoken to me in a year.
My guess would be electrical, but here's a thred on another board that might answer the question. http://www.bigmacktrucks.com/index.php?showtopic=10115
